Visa free regime
Citizens of EU countries, USA, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Vatican, Iceland, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Mongolia, Lithuania and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (except Turkmenistan) can visit Ukraine for up to 90 days without a visa once in 180 days.  This means that citizens of the above mentioned countries can enter Ukraine for a maximum of 90 days without a visa but can return only after 180 days after their first arrival. Very Important for all foreigners:
You only need to register your passports if you are in the country for more than three months and the registration  process must start a few days before the 90 days expire.
Fines:
Adopted Law No. 1159-VI  regarding the reinforcement of responsibility for violation of Rules on Entry and Stay in Ukraine.
This Law amends the articles 204-206-1 of the Administrative Code of Ukraine and increases fines for violating the Rules on Entry and Stay of Foregners and Stateless Persons in Ukraine. The Law forsees the following fines:
100-200 of citizens' tax free minimum incomes for violating the procedure of employment, education, registration, residence of foreigners and stateless persons in Ukraine.
20-40 of citizens' tax free minimum incomes for delay in foreigners' registration in Ukraine
60-120 of citizens' taxfree minimum incomes for violating the procedure on accommodation, transport and other services to be provided to foreigners
30-60 of citizens' tax free minimum incomes for illegal transfer of foreigners to the territory of Ukraine.

The law becomes effective as of April 2009.

Ukrainian Residency Examination State Certificates:
In cooperation with the Kiev City Government Health Authority AMC has been authorised to provide certified Ukrainian Residency Exams for all foreigners.

 



January 2009:  Important changes to the Ukrainian immigration rules:  Strict Control over Foreigners' Stay in Ukraine to be Introduced

Kyiv, 14 January 2009:  New electronic entry and exit control database tracking all violations relating to the foreigners' stay rules in Ukraine started to operate in December 2008.  According to the applicable  Ukraininan legislation  foreign nationals may stay in Ukraine without registration with the Department of Citizenship, Immigration and Registration of Individuals up to 90 or 180 days depending upon the legal basis used by an individuals to enter and stay in Ukraine, e.g. based on a specific type of visa or non-visa entry, etc.    An individual violating the rules of stay in Ukraine is subject to a penalty in the amount from UAH680 to UAH3,400 and/or may be restricted from entering Ukraine for the period of 5 years.  According to the Rules of Entering Ukraine by Foreign Nationals the company inviting the foreigner will be yearly examined by the Immigration Department.  In case of a violation of the rules of foreign nationals' employment and registration  with the Immigration Department is detected by the Immigration Department, penalty in the amount of up to UAH3,400 will be imposed on the intiviting company.

Who needs a visa
Citizens of all countries apart from those that have a visa-free agreement with Ukraine or citizens of countries that can travel to Ukraine as tourists without a visa thanks to the unilateral agreement valid since July 2005 (see Important notice above).

What kind of visa
Depending on the purpose of your journey, choose type, duration and how many entries you want. It is a good idea to choose at least the double entry option if you're staying for more than 3 months. Your visa can be prolonged once you're in Ukraine, but you cannot change the type. Visas cost from 50 euros for 3 month private single entry visa and increase from there, the one year multiple entry business visa will cost you around 150 euros.

Applying for a visa
Applying for a visa is possible at your nearest embassy or consulate of Ukraine. Fill in the application form, attach your invitation, 2 passport photos, your passport and the consular fee. The standard time for obtaining a visa is 5 working days. Some embassies offer express visa in 2 days. If you have further questions, call the Visas Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on +380 44 212 83 17.  You can NOT obtain a visa in Ukraine!

Prolonging your visa/expired visa
You can prolong your visa at the Central OVIR office located on Bereznyakivska 4a. You can only extend the visa as the same type and it will always only be valid for one exit from Ukraine. The process takes about 4 to 5 days and you should apply only about 5 days before your visa expires. The cost is approximately 30 Hryvnas and be prepared there may be queues at the office.

To pick up documents: Mo-Fri 16:00 - 17:00

What can you bring to Ukraine
Cash 10,000 EUR or equivalent without customs declaration

Wine or Beer 2 litres

Tobacco 200 grams

At the passport control they will ask you how much money you have. If you have more than the allowed amount and they find it, the money can be confiscated and you'll pay a fine.

Insurance
For foreigners it is compulsory to buy health insurance if they stay over 90 days, if you have business visa for a year, it is over 6 months. The insurance costs about 70 UAH per month and covers all emergencies. You will need to buy the insurance from PROsto Insurance company which also offers other insurance plans such as for travel, car insurance etc. Their website has all the info in English.
