Vernissage
Taste of Paris in Kiev
article by Beate Schober
After a fashion show in Vozdvyzhensky Hotel which is most charming small hotel in Kiev, I was slowly moving up Andreevski Spusk trying to catch a taxi to bring me home. The Spusk is not crowded in evening hours and most windows are dark. I was therefore surprised when I passed by one window full of light and art decorations. I went in to find out what kind of a place it was. To my big surprise it was a cozy small bistro in French style.
All walls were covered with pictures, art was everywhere. There were small tables for two set with simple glasses and cutlery. The atmosphere was so nice that I decided to have a glass of red wine. I sat down flipping through one of the art books which were lying around. Then I checked the menu. The choice of food was wide and at medium prices. I got tempted with pancakes with crème caramel sauce. Nicely done and very tasty. I became more curious and asked if there was an administrator as there usually is in Ukrainian restaurants. Instead, the owners themselves were present. A French man, former gallery owner, with his Ukrainian wife. I was told that the paintings are on sale and there are small art exhibitions take place at Vernissage regularly.
The whole impression was great. Vernissage is a place to be remembered and to be frequented. For sure it will be my favorite restaurant.
