There are dozens of taxi companies in Kiev that you can call and either order a cab right away or book one for a specific time and date. If you are already somewhere in the city and don't want to call and wait, you can take a taxi quite easily by simply stretching your arm out at any passing cars. There are private taxi drivers but also, some people will stop and offer you a ride if they have time or you are going in the same direction. You will still have to pay them - it is a way they make small extra money.

Most taxis that you catch on the street don't use taxameter. It is therefore important that you agree on a price before you get in. Be careful at night because most taxi drivers will ask for ridiculous sums assuming you are a foreigner with tons of money. So remember, it is not normal to pay 50 Hryvnas for a ride home from a nighclub unless you live really far away from the city center.

When you are at home your office or somewhere you want to leave and call a cab, make sure you give them address with the right number of the house and preferably the yard entrance (usually marked with a letter, for example Krehsatyk 5A). Prices of the companies differ but they are the same during day and night and it is safer. Some of the bigger companies updated their car fleet and send one type of car so you recognize them easily. If you need a check for the ride, better tell that to the operator on the phone in advance or to the driver when you get in.

To get to Boryspol Airport expect to pay about 100 - 120 Hryvnas. Quote on call means that the dispatcher will tell you the price when you make the order.
