Kiev 15th Anniversary Hash Bash
Mark your calendars for June 5-7 when Kiev’s most eccentric running club, Kiev Hash House Harriers or KH3, celebrate their 15th Anniversary Hash Bash with special events called the Red Dress Run, Anniversary Hash, and the Slow Hangover Run where participants will gather together for refreshment, humor, song and an occasional feast. The Anniversary Hash Bash is open to the public where both newcomers and Hashers will find fun, trail and friendship within various scheduled activities.
The Hash House Harriers is running and social club that has 1898 hash groups registered in the world directory, located in 1231 cities and in 183 countries. Members join the pack of hounds (runners) to chase down the trail set by the hare or hares (other runners), then gather together for socializing and drinking. The trail includes false trails, short cuts, dead ends and splits. These features are designed to keep the pack together regardless of fitness level or running speed, as front-runners are forced to slow down to find the “true” trail, allowing stragglers to catch up. Trails may pass through back alleyways, residential areas, city streets, forests, or shopping malls and may climb fences, explore storm drains or climb steep hills all in pursuit of the hare.
Members often describe their group as “a drinking club with a running problem,” indicating that the social element of an event is important rather than athleticism. Beer remains an integral part of a Hash event and at the Beer Check as well as at the end of the event the pack stops to consume beer, water, or snacks.
Timetable for the 15th Anniversary Hash Bash starts June 5th, Friday evening. The Red Dress Run is through the 5 famous Kiev pubs in the city center with the pub route consisting of Bierstube – Art Club 44 – Docker’s ABC – O’Brien’s – Golden Gate. The Hashers close out at The Golden Gate Irish Pub with dancing, fun and a charity donation party.
The Red Dress Run is a special event and is held by individual kennel clubs. According to hasher lore, a newcomer in San Diego, California was invited to a hash run. Unbeknownst to her, it was a running group and she attended in a red dress instead of running clothes. Upon being mocked for wearing such an outfit, she ran the trail anyway. Other hashers began wearing red dresses as a joke and the tradition became an event all around the world where both men and women don their running shoes and their finest red frocks, sheaths, gowns and skirts and take to the streets, drawing stares of bewilderment and admiration from passers-by and bystanders. As with all hashes, the goal is fun and beer, but everyone admits that the red dresses add that extra touch of class. Saturday, June 6th is when the surviving hashers will meet on the platform of Lisova metro station and the special hash bus will depart to the Kniazhy Dvir Hotel located in the Brovary district, 14 kilometers from Kiev. The 15th Anniversary Hash Run will include sport activities, barbeque, auction, fancy dress party and late night dancing at the disco.
The Slow Hangover Run will take place on Sunday, June 7th in the Brovary district where members will fish, swim and participate in a final farewell ceremony. Both newcomers, out –of-towners and the Kiev community are invited to participate in this fun and action filled celebratory social event. The 3-day Anniversary Hash Bash costs $150.00 but there are other flexible payment options if schedule or budget requirements are needed.
