Going to the cinema in Kiev

The governement decided in January 2007  that all films should be either dubbed or subtitled in Ukrainian, this means even those expats who speak Russian will be kept out of the local movie theaters, though not always. Several cinemas are now starting to show films in English with Russian or Ukrainian subtitles. The total number of such films arriving here is limited, but it marks an improvement on days gone by when the only English films to be found were those sold as DVDs for the equivalent of $4 at the Petrovka market.

You can reliably enjoy a film in its original version is during the various film festivals held throughout the year here, often the result of collaborations between the various foreign embassies and the Ministry of Culture - or as often the cinemas themselves. Usually there are two screening times - one in original language and one dubbed or subtitled. Most cinemas in Kiev show mainstream titles. If you're interested in alternative and art movies, check the schedule of cinema Zhovten occassionally. Cinema Ukraina  and Kiev are the most popular venues for festivals.

You can enjoy full length films in English every Thursday evening in the 300-seat cinema .They are all classic British or American films shown on the big screen in English, of course, though occassionally with English subtitles.  There will be a number of series.

Drive-in movie theater
Kinodrom drive-in movie theater is located on Stadium TSSKA at 10 Vozdukhoflotskiy Prospect. In the summer season movie showings start at 10:00 p.m. and midnight and on Friday and weekends there are additional showing - at 2:00 p.m. Kinodrom's parking contains 70 places with a 50 hrv fee for one car with up to as many guests depending upon the driver.
