Going to the cinema in Kiev
The first thing you have to know about going to a cinema in Kiev is that all movies are dubbed. So far, the dubbing has been in vast majority in Russian. The governement, however, decided in January this year, that all films should be either dubbed or subtitled in Ukrainian language. So now even the advanced expats who speak Russian will be kept out of the local movie theatres. On the other hand, for example Butterfly cinemas give you several options - on their website, scheduled films are marked depending on the languages. Some are in Ukrainian, some in Russian with Ukrainian subtitles and a few are shown in English with Ukrainian subtitles.
The only time you can reliably enjoy a film in its original version is during festivals. Usually there are two screening times - one in original language and one dubbed or subtitled. Most cinemas in Kiev show mainstream titles. If you're interested in alternative and art movies, check the schedule of cinema Zhovten occassionally. Cinema Ukraina is the most popular venue for festivals. |
